Richard leads one of Law North Limited’s property and business teams. He has considerable experience in all aspects of property and commercial law. His team also completes personal work for clients in the areas of wills, estates and trusts. In addition to his client work, Richard is the also the Business Manager of Law North Limited.

Richard originally comes from a mid-Canterbury family and achieved his law degree from Canterbury University. His career started in Christchurch where he worked his way to partnership for a local firm as a commercial and property lawyer. In the early 1980s, Northland’s climate beckoned and he moved to Kerikeri. At that time, Kerikeri was a small horticultural town. Over the past 25 years, Richard has been heavily involved in the town’s development to become the biggest commercial and retail centre north of Whangarei.

Richard and his wife Tracy live on a lifestyle block (aka an outdoor gym). From there, they have enjoyed the rewards and challenges of raising children and step-children. For some years, Richard has also part owned and operated a horticultural property and a farm. These businesses have given him an invaluable insight into the businesses of his horticulture and rural clients.

Richard has always had a keen interest in sports. He was a representative rugby player in his Canterbury days. Yacht racing then took the place of rugby and he represented New Zealand in keel boats, competing in a number of off-shore races, including the Sydney to Hobart. He is an active power lifter, competing nationally and internationally.

Meeting, working with and getting to know a wide range of people is Richard’s favourite part of his job. His client base is broad ranging from local businesses to high net worth local and overseas individuals.

Richard strongly believes “you have to leave the world a better place than when you arrived”. He has provided pro bono legal services to the Kerikeri RSA, Kerikeri Bowling Club, Croquet Club, Food Bank, the Kerikeri Cruising Club, Kerikeri Community Gym, the Kerikeri Business Association, the Turner Centre, Kerikeri Civic Trust, Te Mira in Kaikohe and a number of other community organisations. Richard is currently a Trustee and Chairperson of both the Kerikeri Area Sport and Recreation Trust and Northland Community Foundation. He is also the Chair of Project Promise the fundraising vehicle for a cancer centre in Whangarei.
