Graham Day
Position: Lawyer
I am a Northland local and a lawyer in the Law North litigation team.
Professional background and work;
I have two roles at Law North. First, I am a family property lawyer. This means I assist families in a range of situations concerning their property:
· I set up structures to protect assets when couples enter new relationships.
· I work to ensure a fair division of assets when couples separate.
· I help families protect the assets of incapacitated family members if there is no power of attorney.
· I dissolve marriages.
· I assist clients seeking to hold estates responsible for promises made by deceased persons.
· I help family members wishing to obtain a more reasonable share of an estate.
· I assist estates in defending similar claims.
The best part about my family law role is the people I meet. I enjoy meeting new people and helping them in difficult situations. I especially like assisting elderly residents with their legal problems.
Second, I work for the Far North District Council. I assist in providing research based opinions to the Council, covering all areas of local government law. I have a particular interest in Public Works Act cases. I also assist Jo Baguley with the Council’s Court work as necessary. My Council role is very rewarding. It allows me to continue researching novel and interesting legal topics. I have enjoyed research based work since my tertiary days (aside from my legal degree (LLB) I have a MA with first class honours in ancient history from the University of Auckland).
Outside of work
Outside of work I spend most of my time either at the Kerikeri Community Gym, riding my mountain bike in the Waitangi Forest, or drinking coffee. If you see me around town (or in the forest) please come and say hello.
