Fallen off your horse recently?

Enduring powers of attorney are key documents which every adult should have.

Enduring powers of attorney will enable somebody to look after you, and your property, in the event that you are unable to do so. Your attorney will be able to make decisions about your personal care and welfare (for example, where you live) and manager your money (or benefits) so that your bills can be paid.

If you do not have current powers of attorney and you are suddenly unable to take care of yourself (perhaps you fall off your new motorbike or are kicked by a horse) your family will be required to head to the Family Court to obtain orders. The cost of doing so will be about five times as much as setting up the power of attorney.

The law society has just released a new guide to powers of attorney. It can be downloaded and read from the law society website (https://www.lawsociety.org.nz/news-and-communications/guides-to-the-law/powers-of-attorney )

If you require assistance with powers of attorney, or have a family member without an attorney who needs help, please contact Law North by email (info@lawnorth.co.nz) or phone (09 4077099) and we fix the problem.
